BEIJING (AP) — American and Jamaican sprinters grabbed six of the eight spots in the Olympic women's 100-meter final Sunday, with Jamaicans Shelly-Ann Fraser and Kerron Stewart leading the way in their respective semifinals.

Defending Olympic champion Yuliya Nesterenko of Belarus failed to advance.

Sherone Simpson was the third runner from Jamaica to make the gold-medal round, set for later Sunday, as the Caribbean island hoped someone could join men's champion Usain Bolt for a gold-medal sweep of track's glamour event.

America's three entrants, Lauryn Williams, Torri Edwards and Muna Lee, all made it, as well. Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie of the Bahamas and Jeanette Kwakye of Britain rounded out the final eight.  Full Story

BEIJING, Aug. 17 (Xinhua) -- American and Jamaican sprinters will dominate the women's 100m final on Sunday evening at the Beijing Olympic Games.

One Jamaican favorite for the women's dash title Shelly-Ann Fraser led all the eight finalists in 11.00 seconds.

Torri Edwards, the biggest hope of the United States for the sprint title, was the third worst performer, due to her slow start with a reaction time of 0.174 second, into the finals.

Muna Lee and Lauryn Williams, both of the United States, as well as Kerron Stewart and Sherone Simpson, both from Jamaica, are expected to compete for the medals.

The rest two final slots are occupied by Jeanette Kwakye of Britain and Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie of Bahamas.

A prodigious sprinter, Ferguson made her first international appearance at the 1992 IAAF World Junior Championships at age 16. Winner of the CAC’s 200m in 1995 and 100m in 1997, Ferguson won the much coveted NCAA sprint double in 1998.
